What is Matcha Tea?
Matcha tea is a type of powdered green tea originating in Japan. Unlike other teas, it is made by finely grinding the green tea leaves, allowing the whole leaf to be consumed and making the most of its nutrients. This method not only enhances its flavour and colour, but also increases the benefits it offers.
Traditionally, matcha is used in the Japanese tea ceremony, but today it is found in a wide variety of recipes, from drinks to desserts.
How is matcha tea made?
Making matcha tea may seem complicated at first, but with a little practice it becomes simple. Here are the basic steps:
- Sift the powder: Use a fine sieve to avoid lumps and achieve a smooth texture.
- Add hot water: Heat water to about 80°C (without boiling) and pour approximately 70 ml over 1-2 teaspoons of matcha in a bowl.
- Whisk the matcha: Use a W-shaped bamboo whisk (chasen) until a light foam forms on the surface.
And that’s it! You will have a perfectly prepared cup of traditional matcha.
Ways of serving matcha tea
Matcha tea is very versatile and can be enjoyed in many ways:
- Traditional matcha: Prepared with hot water, as explained above.
- Matcha latte: Combine matcha with plant-based or cow’s milk and a touch of sweetener.
- Cold: Enjoy matcha with ice and cold water, ideal for hot days.
- In recipes: Add matcha to smoothies, cookies, cakes and more for a healthy and delicious twist.
Benefits of matcha tea
Matcha tea is not only delicious, but it is also full of health benefits:
- Rich in antioxidants: It contains catechins, which help fight cell damage and reduce the risk of disease.
- Improves concentration: Thanks to its L-theanine content, it provides sustained energy without the jitters that coffee can cause.
- Promotes weight loss: Accelerates metabolism and promotes fat burning.
- Natural detoxifier: Being rich in chlorophyll, it helps eliminate toxins from the body.
- Supports the immune system: Its high vitamin and mineral content strengthens the body’s defences.
